THE 2010 (RJR) JAMAICA ST. LEGER RACEDAY press launch was held at the Terra Nova Hotel , Kingston on Friday, July 2, 2010.
Mr. Gary Cole (Group Marketing Manager, RJR) spoke on behalf of the sponsor RJR Communications Group, while Mr. David Reid (Festival Song Coordinator, JCDC) gave comments from JCDC. Mr. Denzil Miller Jr. (Racing Secretary), gave the Racing Details while Mr. Christopher Armond (Acting CEO/ Director of Marketing) spoke on behalf of the promoter, Caymanas Track Limited. Also in attendance was Mr. Raphael Gordon (Deputy Chairman, CTL) who offered the vote of thanks.
On Saturday, July 10, 2010 Caymanas Track Limited in association with The RJR Communications Group will stage the final leg of the local Triple Crown series, THE 84th running of THE JAMAICA ST. LEGER (GR.IR). This prestigious day of racing will bring to a close a very exciting and successful classic season which started on April 5, 2010 with the 1000 and 2000 Guineas. The day will offer 11 races of which the purses of 10 races will benefit from the $1M dollars being added by the RJR Communications Group. The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) promoters of the 2010 CLARO sponsored Festival Song Competition and CLARO will provide the day's entertainment package.
The 84th running of THE JAMAICA ST. LEGER (GR.IR) is restricted to Native Bred Three-Year-Olds over 2000 metres or 10 furlongs for a total purse of $3.9 million inclusive of $550,000 from the sponsor, RJR Communications Group. Nine (9) races on the supporting card will receive an additional boost to their purses of $50,000 each.
The country's best Native- Bred colt MARK MY WORD will take the spotlight for his connections; Owners Elite Bloodstock Limited, Trainer Richard Azan, Jockey Dick Cardenas and Groom Donville Smith as they go in search of racings ultimate prize, the TRIPLE CROWN.
MARK MY WORD will attempt to become the 10th horse to win the Triple Crown at Caymanas Park since opening in 1959 after ROYAL DAD (1981), MONDAY MORNING (1987), LIU CHIE POO (1988), THE VICEROY (1989), MILLIGRAM (1992), WAR ZONE (1996), I'M SATISFIED (2000), and SIMPLY MAGIC (filly) (2002) and ALSAFRA (filly) (2008).
MARK MY WORD (Cant 9F, last 4F, 51:1 on 28-6-10) in his quest for the final jewel could face strong challenges from the likes of the following possible starters:
