THE 2009 BIGGA JAMAICA OAKS RACEDAY was launched in the Trainer's Room on the Caymanas Park Compound on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. The raceday is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2009.
Karen Rosen (Group Marketing Manager) spoke on behalf of the sponsor Wisynco Group, while Mrs. Millicent Lynch, (Executive Manager, Marketing) and Mr. Denzil Miller Jr. (Racing Secretary), spoke on behalf of the promoter, Caymanas Track Limited.
The 70th running of The Jamaica Oaks (GR.IR) boasts a total purse of $2.7M, inclusive of $700,000 donated by the sponsor BIGGA. The race is for Native-Bred 3-Y-O Fillies, and they will compete over 2000 Metres.
An additional $300,000 will also be divided and added to the purses of six (6) other races on the card which will bring the total contribution to purses to $1M.
The (BIGGA) Jamaica Oaks (GR.IR) as is customary, will be run in honour of Mrs. Hilma Veira, former General Manager of the Jamaica Racing Commission and Hall of Famer, who dedicated her talents and skills to the Sport of Kings for more than a quarter of a century.
After the season's first classic on April 4, it is back to the drawing board for some, and high hopes for others. There is also a very interesting situation on the horizon for racing fans, as a rivalry between the nation's top two 3-Y-O fillies will continue in the 70th running of the BIGGA JAMAICA OAKS.
These outstanding Fillies are Triple Crown contender SAINT CECILIA (owned by messrs S. & W.P Valentine Chung) and MISS RUTH (owned by Mrs. Ruth Hussey) runner up in the 1000 Guineas.
