THE 2009 BG&LC RACE DAY

THE 2009 BG&LC RACEDAY was launched at the Knutsford Court Hotel on Thursday, July 16, 2009. The raceday is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2009 (Emancipation Day) at Caymanas Park.

 

Mr. Derek Peart (Executive Director) and Mr. George Soutar (Chairman) spoke on behalf of the sponsor Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission, while Mr. Denzil Miller Jr. (Racing Secretary), offered the racing details and Mr. Christopher Armond (Director, Chairman Advisory Council, CTL ) gave the promoter's remarks.

 

Distinguished guests, Media Representatives; Representatives from The Betting Gaming & Lotteries Commission; Caymanas Track Limited; also Representatives from the Trainers, Jockeys and Grooms Associations; good morning.

 

On behalf of the entire industry, I take this opportunity to thank Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission on this; their seventh Annual Sponsorship in Thoroughbred Racing scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2009(Emancipation day). The sponsorship is valued at $800,000 to purses.

 

The feature event will be the seventh running of The BG&LC Trophy (GRII) over 1400 metres for a purse of $1,000,000 (inclusive of $540,000 from the sponsor) for Open Allowance Horses with the possible starters being:

The secondary feature will be run in honour of Hall-Of-Famer and former General Manager of both the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission and the Jamaica Racing Commission, Mr. Charles Randle.  The race will be The Charles Randle Cup, over 1820 metres for a purse of $500,000 (inclusive of $100,000 from the sponsor) for Native-Bred Four-Year-Olds and Up  Non-Winners of two races lifetime.

 

There will also be a race run in honour of the late Mr. Albert Rose, a former team member of the BG&LC. This race will be over 1100 metres for a purse of $500,000 (inclusive of $60,000 from the sponsor) for Native-Bred 5-Y-O & Up Non-winners of three races lifetime.

 

An additional $100,000 will be divided for the purses of seven (7) supporting races on The 2009 Emancipation Day Card.

 

There will also be a 'Gimmick Race' over 200 metres where fans are invited to participate for a purse of $40,000.00. Fans will have the opportunity to become an owner, trainer, jockey and horse, all in one. There will be 12 teams of two; one gentleman (horse) and one lady (jockey/driver). The gentleman will wear a harness and the lady will steer him to victory. Entry forms will be available in the Racing Office and will close at 12:00noon on Monday, July 27, 2009.
