THE 2017 BG&LC RACE DAY
 

 

 The Welcome was offered by Ms. Jeanette Lewis (Corporate Affairs & Communication, BG&LC) Mr. Clovis Metcalfe O.D (Chairman BG&LC) offered the Sponsor’s Remarks, while Mr. Christopher Armond spoke on behalf of the Promoter (SVREL) and Mr. Denzil Miller Jr. (Racing Secretary, SVREL) gave the racing details. Mr. Paul Hoo (Chairman, SVL-group & SVREL) was also in attendance.

 

On behalf of the entire industry, we take this opportunity to thank Betting Gaming & Lotteries Commission on this; their 13th year of Sponsorship of Emancipation Day Tuesday August 1, 2017. The sponsorship is valued at $2.5M to purses.

 

The feature event will be the 13th running of the BG&LC Trophy (GR II) for Open Allowance horses over 1100 meters for a purse of $1,500,000 (inclusive of $700,000 from the sponsor) the possible starters being:

The secondary feature will be run in honour of Hall-Of-Famer and former General Manager of the Betting Gaming & Lotteries Commission and the Jamaica Racing Commission, Mr. Charles Randle. The race will be The Charles Randle Cup, over 1100 meters for a purse of $870,000 (inclusive of $200,000 from the sponsor) for Native-Bred Three-Year-Olds (Maidens and Untrieds).

 

The Director’s Cup over 1820 meters for a purse of $650,000    (inclusive of $200,000 from the sponsor) for Native-Bred Four-Year-Old and up Non-Winners of three races lifetime.

 

While there will be three other races that will be run in memory of former employees of BG&LC:

(i)  The Albert Rose Memorial Trophy over 1200M for a Purse of $600,000

      (inclusive of $200,000 from the sponsor) for $180,000 Claimers (Fillies).

(ii) The Josseth Grey Memorial Trophy over 1000M(S) for a Purse of

      $660,000 (inclusive of $200,000 from the Sponsor) for the Claiming

      group $250,000 - $210,000.

 

(iii) The Charles Hayles Memorial Trophy over 1100M for a purse of

        $690,000 (inclusive of $200,000 from the sponsor) for Claiming group

       $350,000- $300,000 (inclusive of $200,000 from the sponsor).

 

A trophy to commemorate Jamaica’s 55th Anniversary will be offered to the Native-bred 3-y-o fillies non-winners of two race lifetime over 1200M for a purse of $900,000(inclusive of $200,000 from the sponsor).

 

The Day will also be highlighted by The Annual Staging of the Emancipation Day Trophy for the Three-Year-Old and Up Claiming group ($600,000-$500,000) over 1300 meters for a purse of $750,000 (inclusive of $200,000 from the sponsor).

 

The remaining two races on the card will be named after departments of the BG&LC. They are:

(I)    The Compliance and Regulatory Division - for a purse of $570,000

       (inclusive of $140,000 from the sponsor) for 4-y-o and Up non-winners

        of two races over 1000M(S).

(II)  The Licensing and Registration Division - for a purse of $600,000

       (inclusive of $140,000 from the sponsor) for Native-bred 4-y-o &Up

       Maidens over 1400M

 

 

 

Racing fans are invited to participate in the BG&LC ‘Gimmick Race’

over 100 meters on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 for a purse of $120,000.00

(1st $40,000, 2nd $35,000, 3rd $25,000 and 4th $20,000). Fans will have the opportunity to become an owner, trainer, jockey and horse all in one. There will be 12 teams of two, one gentleman (horse) and one lady (jockey/driver). The gentleman will wear harness and the lady will steer him to victory. Entries close at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday July 26, 2017 in the Racing Office. All Participants must be 18 years and older.
