THE (RJR) JAMAICA ST. LEGER DAY 2008

 

THE 2008 (RJR) JAMAICA ST. LEGER RACEDAY press launch was broadcasted live on Television Jamaica (TVJ) on Lyndhurst Road, Kingston on Tuesday, June 1, 2008.

 

Mr. Gary Cole (Director of Marketing) spoke on behalf of the sponsor RJR Communications Group, while Mrs. Millicent Lynch, (Executive Manager, Marketing) and Mr. Denzil Miller Jr. (Racing Secretary), spoke on behalf of the promoter, Caymanas Track Limited.

 

On Saturday, July 12, 2008 Caymanas Track Limited in association with The RJR Communications Group will stage THE 82nd running of THE JAMAICA ST. LEGER (GR.IR). This prestigious day of racing will bring to a close a very exciting and successful classic season which started on April 5, 2008 with the 1000 and 2000 Guineas. The day will offer 11 races headlined by two sponsored races.

 

THE RACES ARE:

 

The 7th running of THE RJR CLASSIC (GR.III) for a Total Purse of $600,000 inclusive of $100,000 from the sponsor, RJR Communications Group.  This is an Overnight Allowance race for Three-Year-Olds and Upward over 1500 metres or 7 ½ furlongs.

 

 

The 82nd running of THE (RJR) JAMAICA ST. LEGER (GR.IR) for a total purse of $3 million inclusive of $450,000 from the sponsor, RJR Communications Group.  The race is restricted to Native Bred Three-Year-Olds over 2000 metres or 10 furlongs.

 

The 82nd running of The Jamaica St. Leger (GR.I) takes center stage on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Caymanas Park and will highlight the country’s best Native- Bred filly ALSAFRA. The team which comprises of Owners Messrs Sherman Clachar and Norman Gordon, Trainer Fitznahum Williams, champion Jockey, Brian Harding and Groom Arthors Spencer will be going in search of racings ultimate prize, the TRIPLE CROWN.

ALSAFRA will attempt to become the 2nd filly to win the Triple Crown and the eighth overall at Caymanas Park after ROYAL DAD (1981), MONDAY MORNING (1987), LIU CHIE POO (1988), THE VICEROY (1989), MILLIGRAM (1992), WAR ZONE (1996), I’M SATISFIED (2000), and SIMPLY MAGIC (2002).

 

ALSAFRA in her quest for the final jewel could face strong challenges from the likes of the following possible starters:
