THE 88TH running of THE (DIGICEL) JAMAICA DERBY
(GR. IR)
THE DERBY was first run in Jamaica in 1921 and was won by a horse called BUCK DANCER. Since its inaugural running all Breeders, Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Grooms not only have as their sole aim the winner’s share of the $5 million purse of $2.7 million, but mostly the Prestige, the Pageantry, the Tradition and the Glory that comes from winning or competing in the greatest Classic in any horseracing jurisdiction in the world, THE DERBY. Added to that dream, is the fact that a thoroughbred has ONLY ONE chance in its racing career to compete in THE DERBY.
THE (DIGICEL) JAMAICA DERBY
(GR.IR) is run over the grueling distance of 2400 metres
or 1.5 miles and is a true test of speed, stamina, courage and class of these
Beautiful Thoroughbreds. It is also the
second leg of THE JAMAICAN TRIPLE CROWN, which is made up of THE GUINEAS
CLASSICS, THE DERBY and THE JAMAICA ST. LEGER.
Over the past 87 years some
magnificent thoroughbreds have galloped their way into the history books and
the hearts of millions of fans who have walked through the turnstiles of Knutsford Park and Caymanas Park since 1921:-
